The Key to Choosing a Pool Contractor Without Getting Ripped Off
How to Check References and Reviews Before You Sign Anything

Hello
Every year, I hear from families across North America and beyond who regret their pool installation experience. Concrete pools, fiberglass pools, above-ground pools, it doesn’t matter what type of pool you choose if you pick the wrong contractor.
Homeowners only get one chance to get this right.
Sadly, too many don’t.
After over 20 years in the pool industry, I’ve seen how one step can save you from stress, headaches, and costly mistakes:
Check your contractor’s references.
But not in the old-fashioned way.
Checking References in a Modern World: What Really Matters
Most pool shoppers today don’t want to call a list of strangers to ask about their pool project, and you shouldn’t have to.
Today, transparency is your modern reference list.
Here’s what I recommend:
Google them. Look for detailed, recent Google Reviews with photos. Check how they handle complaints and how they interact with customers.
Check Facebook Reviews. Many customers share photos and experiences there.
Search local Facebook groups and Nextdoor. Type in the company name and see what your neighbors say.
Look for video testimonials. Good pool companies often showcase customers sharing their experiences on video.
Review their website and social media. Look for recent installs, tagged customer posts, and project galleries.
If you want to go a step further, ask:
“Can you show me photos and testimonials from customers you’ve worked with in the last year?”
A reputable contractor will gladly share these with you. If they installed 30 pools last year but have zero online reviews or photos, that’s a red flag.
Social proof is the new reference list. Use it.
Do Privacy Laws Stop Pool Contractors from Sharing References?
Sometimes you’ll hear, “We can’t give out customer information due to privacy laws.” That’s true, and it’s exactly why online reviews and public testimonials matter so much. Customers can share their experience publicly, on their terms.
While you can still ask to speak with a past customer if you prefer, checking online reviews often gives you a clear, unfiltered look at how a contractor treats clients.
Why Checking Pool Contractor Reviews and References Matters
A pool is a major investment in your home and family life. The contractor you choose will shape that experience for years to come.
By checking references the modern way, you protect your project, your wallet, and your peace of mind.
Steps to Vet and Choose the Right Pool Contractor
Before signing any contract:
- Check Google and Facebook Reviews.
- Search your local community groups.
- Look for video testimonials.
- Review website and social media galleries.
- Ask for recent public photos and testimonials.
If they are transparent and take pride in their work, you’ll see it. If not, you’ll know.
You deserve a contractor who will still be there for you long after the water settles. Vet wisely, and your dream pool will be worth it.
Frequently Asked Questions About Vetting Pool Contractors
What red flags should I look for when checking pool contractor reviews?
Watch for patterns like repeated phrases, only five-star reviews with no details, or many reviews posted in a short period. Check for photos attached to reviews and whether reviewers have a history of reviewing other businesses. A lack of specifics in reviews can also indicate they may not be genuine.
How many references should a pool contractor have?
Ideally, a pool contractor should be able to point you to multiple recent projects, online reviews, and testimonials within the past year. While exact numbers can vary by market size, seeing 10-15 public reviews or testimonials is a good sign they have active, satisfied customers.
Is it okay to hire a pool contractor with no references?
Hiring a contractor with no references comes with risk. If you choose to move forward, ensure they can provide photos of recent work, share their training background, and walk you through their process clearly. Consider starting with smaller projects or seeking referrals from others who have worked with them.
What if a pool builder has photos of their work but no online reviews?
Photos on social media are a good start, but reviews add credibility. Ask if you can speak with past customers or if they plan to gather reviews soon. Lack of reviews isn't always a dealbreaker but should prompt careful consideration.
How can I tell if a pool contractor’s online reviews are real?
Check for specifics in the reviews, photos, and a consistent posting history. Look for a mix of ratings rather than only perfect scores. Genuine reviews often include project details, challenges, and outcomes that sound authentic.
Where can I find reviews for pool builders near me?
Start with Google Reviews and Facebook, then check local Facebook community groups, Nextdoor, and even Houzz for customer experiences. Searching the company’s name plus your city can also surface additional feedback on forums and local directories.
