Earthquakes and Fiberglass Swimming Pools: Yep, Flexibility is Nice When the Earth Moves

Elegance 40Bluestone resized 600Like many of you, I just was part of the ‘East Coast Earthquake’ of 2011. For 10 seconds, I was sitting in my office, feeling the floor shaking beneath me, and asking myself—“Am I actually in an earthquake???”

Seconds later, I jumped on Facebook and Twitter and boy was it on then... Ahh, I do love social media when it comes to real-time news. Nothing quite like it. :-)

But after the earthquake was over, and I was able to walk outside and see everything had returned to normal, I did breathe a sigh of relief for this one reality—Our swimming pool clients and their pools would be fine...

You see, fiberglass pools are flexible. They can move with the ground as needed, and today, for hundreds of miles up and down the coast of the United States, the ground was moving.

With tensile strength that makes a concrete pool shutter, fiberglass is suited perfectly for such environments—which is also why you often see consumers choose a fiberglass pool when building near a rock quarry, rail road tracks, etc.

So for all our friends out there that were a part of today’s interesting activities, we hope you and your swimming pool are doing well, and if you have a minute, you may want to go visit your neighbor to help them inspect their concrete pool too. ;-)

Note*** The pool in the photo is an Elegance Model by Leisure Pools we recently installed in Northern Va.

Marc, I wasn't really worried about the pool itself but what about the piping and the connections, are they flexible enough or should we be watching for leaks?

Not sure if flexibility always good for the pool. Corner of my pool is separated from concrete patio by 1 inch. It went down, by 1 inch or so and plastic separator felt down. Now I have an inch of space between this corner and top of fiberglass pool. Any advice of how to fix it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi V, sounds like you've got a settling issue, not a flexibility issue. Not sure if there is a good answer in your case. The only way to lift that area up would be to reset the pool. Aesthetically, waterline tile could be used to cover up the blemish if you leave it as is.

Marcus,

Thank you for your quick response. I am aware about different ways (ex. using tiles) to fix look of the pool. But most of all I worry about structural integrity. This just one corner about 10 inches from the center of the corner both sides went down by 1 inch. What would you do, just leave it as is and fix aesthetic look of the pool? Or?.....

Thank you in advance for your answer.

Hey V, my pleasure.

I'd probably leave it for now and fix it aesthetically, but I may also get something in writing from the builder if it's still under warranty.
