The Top 7 Fiberglass Pool Manufacturers for 2021 (and 2022)

Fiberglass Pool Information  |  Pool Manufacturing Process  |  Fiberglass Pool Manufacturers

If you’ve been looking for the perfect fiberglass pool, you’ve probably come across quite a few options. These options will obviously include the size, shape, and any add-ons and accessories available to create the pool of your dreams.

However, one critical choice you’ll also have to make involves selecting the manufacturer who’ll actually make your fiberglass pool shell before it goes into a hole in your backyard.

River Pools has been part of the pool industry for over 20 years. Before we started manufacturing our own pool shells, we installed fiberglass pools from many of the country’s top manufacturers.

Our experience with the fiberglass pool industry’s biggest names led us to create the industry’s first “Top 10 Fiberglass Pool Manufacturers” list four years ago... and so much has changed since then! There’s been quite a bit of consolidation, with some major brands now part of larger corporations and others no longer in operation.

We’re often asked how our company -- its people, processes, products, and promises -- stacks up to other major fiberglass pool manufacturers.

In this article, we’ll try to review the largest and most notable fiberglass pool manufacturers in the United States, based on a few key metrics. Every company reviewed here has been assessed on the same metrics in the same way, which should give you something as near as a true apples-to-apples comparison as you’ll find on fiberglass pool manufacturers.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll also do a deeper dive into the project pricing to install one of these manufacturers’ fiberglass pool shells in your yard, what real customers are saying about each company’s pools, and how each manufacturer stacks up against River Pools. All articles on our competitors use only publicly-available and easily-referenced sources for a truly objective and unbiased look into the industry.

Now that you’re up to speed, let’s take a look at America’s largest fiberglass pool manufacturers, in no particular order...

Sun Pools

hero1-e1548044050317

  • Founded (years in service):1995 (26 years)
  • Headquarters: Albany, KY
  • U.S. service range: 31 U.S. states (primarily Northeast and South)
  • Total independent U.S. installers: UNKNOWN
  • Smallest standalone FG pool model: 8’ x 12’ (Cabana 12)
  • Largest standalone FG pool model: 16’ x 42’ (Tropic)
  • Price range (standard FG install): UNKNOWN
  • Total number of FG pool models: 29

Sun Pools has retained its independent presence in the fiberglass pool industry, but has gained new ownership since we last covered them for our previous manufacturer roundup.

Now owned and operated by brothers Kevin and Aaron McCarthy, Sun Pools is still based in Kentucky, and its product lineup seems to have grown -- the company offers several dedicated spas and pool/spa combos in addition to 29 distinct pool models.

Sun Pools has both one of the smallest “full-size” pool models (the 8-by-12 cocktail pool-style Cabana 12) and the largest model we’ve found promoted so far, with its 42-foot-long Tropic model coming in a couple of feet longer than the standard limit for truck-based highway transportation.

Sun Pools offers a limited lifetime structural shell warranty and a three-year interior gelcoat warranty on all its models.

Barrier Reef Pools

freeform-concrete-pool-design

  • Founded (years in service): 25+ years
  • Headquarters: Timmonsville, SC
  • U.S. service range: 23 U.S. states (primarily Midwest / Southeast)
  • Total independent U.S. installers: 84
  • Smallest standalone FG pool model: 8’6” x 17’ (Outback Escape)
  • Largest standalone FG pool model: 16’ 40’ (Whitsunday)
  • Price range (standard FG install): $45,000 - $85,000
  • Total number of FG pool models: 19

As their name might indicate, Barrier Reef Pools got its start Down Under before expanding to the United States and Canada.

Today, the company has a dealer and distribution network spanning 23 U.S. states, utilizing over 80 featured dealers and/or installers. Despite its reach, Barrier Reef keeps some information close to the vest, so we weren’t able to determine how many pools the company manufactures and installs each year.

Barrier Reef focuses on a smaller number of fiberglass pool models than many other manufacturers -- only 19 models are listed on its website, and at least one of those may be a spa add-on rather than a standalone swimming pool.

The company also has a smaller dealer network than most other large fiberglass pool manufacturers, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. We’re pretty selective about our dealer and installer network here at River Pools, too.

Barrier Reef’s pool shells are backed by a limited lifetime structural warranty and a 15-year gelcoat surface warranty.

Leisure Pools

LeisurePools_Horizon_23_SilverGray_AU_2014

  • Founded (years in service): 2000 (21 years)
  • Headquarters: Knoxville, TN
  • U.S. service range: 48+ U.S. states (“we deliver everywhere”)
  • Total independent U.S. installers: 500+
  • Smallest standalone FG pool model: 6’ x 10’ (Fiji Plunge)
  • Largest standalone FG pool model: 16’ 40’ (various)
  • Price range (standard FG install): $35,000 - $60,000
  • Total number of FG pool models: 66

No fiberglass pool manufacturer seems to tout its convenience quite like Leisure Pools.

Leisure and Barrier Reef both started in Australia, but the two companies seem to have very little in common beyond their core business models -- at least if their websites are any indication.

Leisure’s website emphasizes the lifestyle benefits of pool ownership. The site also makes a comparatively bigger deal over the lower maintenance costs for fiberglass pools compared to concrete or vinyl liner pools than other pool makers’ home pages.

The sleekness of Leisure’s website extends to its “find a dealer” page, which looks more like it’s highlighting the offices of some fast-growing tech startup than the different franchisees and dealers who sell and install Leisure fiberglass pools. This page boldly promises “we deliver anywhere” by air, land, or sea, and we’d be interested in seeing how far that promise can stretch. Any Alaskan readers feel like getting an inground pool? Leisure might be able to get you one!

Leisure Pools backs its pool shells with a limited lifetime structural warranty and a lifetime “structural osmosis” warranty, as well as a 10-year surface gelcoat warranty. Leisure Pools also touts its use of Kevlar, carbon fiber, and basalt fiber (made from a type of volcanic rock) in its manufacturing process.

Aqua Technics Pools

trilogy-ground-pool-aquarius-7

  • Founded (years in service): 1976 (45 years)
  • Headquarters: Wilmington, DE
  • U.S. service range: 48+ U.S. states (“shipped to 16 countries”)
  • Total independent U.S. installers: UNKNOWN
  • Smallest standalone FG pool model: 9’6” x 14’6” (Serenity)
  • Largest standalone FG pool model: 16’ x 37’6” (Torino)
  • Price range (standard FG install): NOT STATED
  • Total number of FG pool models: 58

Aqua Technics doesn’t have quite as much of an online presence as the other manufacturers on our list, which makes it slightly challenging to assess its performance on some of the metrics in the list above.

However, it’s clear Aqua Technics has a significant presence in the fiberglass pool manufacturing industry, as the company claims to have delivered over 60,000 pool shells to 16 countries since its founding in 1976. The only other manufacturer with similarly-stated global availability is Leisure Pools.

But where Leisure focuses on the lifestyle benefits of pool ownership, Aqua Technics relies more on quality statements -- its “patented dual coat system” of shell manufacturing goes into quite a bit of detail on the materials and processes this company uses to create each pool shell.

Aqua Technics has a fairly large model lineup, but it seems to focus more on smaller pools than most. Of all manufacturers we reviewed, Aqua Technics was the only one without a full 40-foot-long (or longer) maxed-out pool shell.

Aqua Technics also appears to exclusively manufacture rectangular pools. If you know you want a smaller rectangular pool for your backyard, Aqua Technics might be a good manufacturer to start with.

Latham Pools

latham-fiberglass-pool-reviews

  • Founded (years in service): 1956 (65 years)
  • Headquarters: Latham, NY
  • U.S. service range: 47 U.S. states
  • Total independent U.S. installers: 250+
  • Smallest standalone FG pool model: 10’ x 16’ (Milan)
  • Largest standalone FG pool model: 16’ 40’ (various)
  • Price range (standard FG install): $35,000 - $100,000
  • Total number of FG pool models: 52

Latham Pools is the largest fiberglass pool manufacturer in the world. It’s also, as of this writing, the only publicly-traded fiberglass pool manufacturer in the world, having gone public in April 2021 under the ticker (what else?) SWIM.

The company, now worth nearly $3 billion on public markets, boasts a nationwide distribution network of over 250 U.S.-based “Latham Grand” dealers served by a network of 32 manufacturing facilities.

Latham is also the exclusive fiberglass pool shell supplier for Premier Pools & Spas, which currently sells and/or installs over 5,000 pools each year in the United States -- this number includes concrete/gunite pools as well as fiberglass installations, so the true number of fiberglass pool installations may be much lower.

Latham built its leadership position in the fiberglass pool industry through a combination of organic growth and strategic acquisitions. You might recognize, or even own, a pool once made by one of Latham’s many subsidiary brands, most of which have since been retired in favor of a unified Latham fiberglass pool brand experience:

  • Viking Pools
  • Trilogy Pools
  • Blue Hawaiian Fiberglass Pools
  • Pacific Pools

Latham also owns and produces Coverstar, Pool Cover Specialists, and CoverLogix pool safety covers. Latham brands are also big players in the vinyl liner pool market -- Fort Wayne Pools, Kafko Pool Products, Plastimayd, VynAll, and Premier Swimming Pool Products are all recognized suppliers of inground vinyl liners.

Thursday Pools

70182791_2630771286989820_6538263963497398272_n

  • Founded (years in service): 35+ years
  • Headquarters: Fortville, IN
  • U.S. service range: 48 U.S. states
  • Total independent U.S. installers: UNKNOWN
  • Smallest standalone FG pool model: 9’ x 9’ (Wading Pool)
  • Largest standalone FG pool model: 16’ 42’ (Goliath)
  • Price range (standard FG install): $40,000 - $60,000
  • Total number of FG pool models: 34

Full disclosure: Thursday Pools is our partner company -- both River Pools fiberglass pool shells and Thursday Pools shells are manufactured in the same state-of-the-art facility in Indiana, the “Super Plant,” where Thursday has been based for over 35 years.

Thursday’s facility is claimed to be the only fiberglass pool shell manufacturing plant in the country (or possibly the world) to meet both ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certification standards for certain stringent quality and environmental controls. Thursday Pools also touts its nine-layer manufacturing process and its exclusive fiberglass-first skimmers.

Thursday’s mini-sized Wading Pool model could technically be classified as a spa, but its jumbo Goliath model tips the scales at nearly 42 feet long. There are Thursday Pools models in a few unique shapes as well, like the clamshell-styled Pearl model, which looks like a great fit for palm-lined backyards near beaches.

Thursday Pools also offers a limited lifetime structural warranty and a 15-year surface warranty against osmotic blisters.

Hi! It’s us.

We didn’t include ourselves in the original Top Manufacturers list. We’re not going to toot our own horns in this article, either. But you’ve gotten to see all the stats we could find on some of our largest competitors, so it seemed only fair to show you our stats, too.

As you can see, we’re still growing -- our installer network, backed by a more comprehensive onboarding system for new franchisees, should be much larger in 2022. We produce a smaller lineup of fiberglass pool models than many other manufacturers, but you can expect our product lineup to grow in the near future as well.

All River Pools fiberglass pool shells are backed by a limited lifetime structural warranty and a 15-year surface gelcoat warranty.

Which manufacturer is best for you?

This list is by no means a comprehensive overview of all the fiberglass pool manufacturers in the United States. However, it should provide you with a reasonable, unbiased starting point from which you might be able to make the best pool buying decision for yourself, your family, and your property.

Everything here has been sourced directly from each manufacturer’s publicly available websites and other records, with estimates used where precise numbers were not available.

If you see any errors or inaccuracies, please reach out to us so we can correct them. If you believe your fiberglass pool manufacturing company should have a place on this list, please reach out to us about that as well!
