"The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.”
Wise words indeed from Aristotle.
And none more fitting to explain the industry-changing relationship between Thursday Fiberglass Pools and River Pools.
But to understand this synergy, it’s critical to know what each of these organizations achieved before their partnership of December 2015.
Great innovation, in almost any industry, is often times discovered by those wearing a different lens than their peers. And by using proven methods, techniques, and best practices that have been established in other industries, outsiders can often times look through this lens and ultimately merge the best of both worlds—coming up with an end result superior to anything previously done.
Thus it was with Bill Khamis and Ed Vondell when they started Thursday Pools. With one coming out of corporate America (Chrysler), and the other coming from 35 years of composites experience, Bill and Ed started Thursday Pools in 2011 with a simple goal:
Innovate to create the best designed and longest lasting fiberglass pools in the world. Period.
After four years of arduous work and development, Bill and Ed achieved just that. Not only did Thursday Pools become known in the industry as a company having the finest, quality-driven fiberglass pool shells available on the marketplace, but they also developed the Fiberglass Pool Anchoring System, an innovation that is literally changing the fiberglass swimming pool landscape as we know it.
But despite the fact Thursday was able to achieve these feats, they realized their one Achilles heel was the ability for other pool builders and consumers around North America to learn about and see for themselves just how exceptional of a product they had managed to create.
Hence, where River Pools fits in the story.
The extraordinary story of River Pools is one that has been featured—literally—in business circles, publications, and case studies around the world. From the New York Times to the Daily Mail to TV Stations in Denmark, the amazing way River Pools managed to save their business during the economic downturn of 2008 by using the internet to build their brand and generate more traffic, leads, and sales in the process is a feat that has inspired businesses on a global level to invest in educating their customers while using the power of the internet and other digital technologies.
With over a half a million monthly visitors to their website and unbelievable consumer trust in the marketplace, River Pools knew they were selling themselves, as well as the industry, short if they were to continue to “just” install fiberglass swimming pools in the Virginia/Maryland area.
This frustration became the catalyst for Jim Spiess, Jason Hughes, and Marcus Sheridan—the owners of River Pools—to begin the process of manufacturing their own fiberglass pool shells in 2013.
But much like Thursday Pools was frustrated with their growth pace, River Pools felt exactly the same. Starting a fiberglass pool manufacturing business is no easy feat, requiring millions in initial cash outlay. This reality left them with two choices:
Jim, Jason, and Marcus felt #2 would be ideal, but there was one problem—they simply didn’t feel there was any fiberglass pool manufacturer in the marketplace that shared the vision, values, innovation, and customer service obsession they’d built over the previous 15 years at River Pools.
That was, until, they met Bill and Ed from Thursday.
Remember the quote from the beginning of this little article?
Well, to make a long story short, in December of 2015 River Pools and Thursday Fiberglass Pools merged to create a “super company” within the fiberglass pool industry, making the whole great than the parts and ushering in the next era in the evolution of fiberglass pools. The industry’s most innovative and trusted manufacturer was now joined by the industry’s most powerful sales and marketing engine, forming River Pools Powered by Thursday Pools Manufacturing.
Consumers and Pool builders alike want quality. They want education. They want honesty.
And they want the best.
That’s what this merger has achieved, and even better, the story is just beginning…
