Fiberglass Pool Shell Weight: Why Is It So Important?

There are many factors that make up the quality of a fiberglass swimming pool, and one of the most important is that the appropriate amount of materials are used during the process of constructing the shell.

Every fiberglass pool manufacturer has a spec sheet that shows exactly how much it is supposed to weigh. Depending on the size of the pool, most shells weigh between 2000-3500lbs. Over the years, and after having installed over 650 fiberglass pools throughout Va, Md, and WV, we have seen at times when pool shells were not built up to the specifications, which means that the structural strenght of the pool may not have been up to par.

It is for this reason that we weigh our pools shells at River Pools and Spas. In fact, this video shows how the process works.

So for those of you wanting to ensure your pool has been built to premium standards, you may want to inquire about the shell's weight with your pool installer.

That is a great video Marcus. Thanks for explaining that as I had never thought about weighing a fiberglass pool to determine if it meets the specs. It's for this and many other things I've learned about you company that I will purchase my next pool from River Pools and Spas.

Have you ever weighed a pool and found it lacking? And if so, do manufacturer's actually honor the specs and allow you to return it and get a new one after the shell is on-site?

Hey Steve, appreciate that.

To answer your question, since we started weighing pools, we've never had a problem, but the manufacturers are quite aware of our practice, and know we'll send them back if they don't meet the standard.

It this information passed onto the customer? It seems as though if you are taking the information, passing it onto the customer by means of a form stating expected weight and actual weight would add another layer of confidence. As you, Jim and Jason have taught us, knowledge is power.

GREAT point Jim. To tell you the truth, the manufacturers should being doing this, and then noting it in the homeowner's paperwork.

That's why I hope this article sparks some initiative on their part.

That's a very good point Marcus. However, the proper weight may not be enough information. Are the best, or at least acceptable, materials being used to manufacture that shell. Are all of the materials coming from the lowest bidder without considering the quality. "Lowest bidder" and "Cheapest price" is hurting our industry.

I don't disagree Bob. Materials are critical as well, but that's a tougher thing to measure. One thing that clearly can be measured though is actual weight of pool versus pool weight as per specs. Make sense?
