4 Fiberglass Pool Manufacturers to Watch Out For in 2011

2011 poolsHaving attended the Pool/Spa Convention in Atlantic City just this past month, I was able to catch up with many of the fiberglass swimming pool manufacturers from around the country and assess the current state of the industry. As everyone knows, the last few years have been difficult for the swimming pool industry with the poor housing market and suffering economy, but I’m happy to say that I feel strongly we’ve turned the corner and the next 11 months should be quite interesting as manufacturers finally catch their breath and can again focus on improving the fiberglass swimming pool market as a whole.

This being said, here are 4 manufacturers (ordered randomly) I’ll be watching closely in 2011:

1. Barrier Reef Pools: Originally out of Australia and currently hailing from South Carolina, Barrier Reef has kept relatively quiet in the fiberglass pool market during their few years here in the country. Notwithstanding, during this time period they have continued to build a solid reputation for quality pool construction and have introduced some new shapes and sizes to their mold line in 2011. Although mainly a southeast company at the moment, Barrier Reef is looking to make a stronger move in the rest of the country and 2011 just might be their breakthrough year in the market.

2. Trilogy Pools: Having had their best year ever in 2010, Trilogy Pools continues to gain strong market share in the fiberglass pool industry throughout much of the Eastern part of the US. Located in Tennessee, Trilogy continues to stay on the cutting edge with their fusion line and have done an excellent job with some of their newer molds in the last year, especially with the Genesis, a 16’x40’ freeform pool that offers your choice of a max depth of either 8’6” or 6’.

3. Leisure Pools: Having experienced huge growth in 2010, Leisure Pools has become one of the top fiberglass pool brands throughout the United States and Canada. Considering they are still relatively young here in the US after coming from Australia roughly 10 years ago, Leisure has a very strong dealer base in most major markets throughout the country.

4. Viking Pools: Although it might surprise some of our readers to see me include Viking Pools on this list, I’m happy to say that Viking and I have moved forward from our past differences and I have hopes that with their new president, Tom Straub, the company is headed in the right direction. With their acquisition of Blue Hawaiian Pools in late 2010, and their continued focus on innovation, Viking seems to be making a big push to gain more market share in 2011.

So there are the 4 fiberglass pool companies I’ll be watching closely in 2011. I would also mention here that just because manufacturers like San Juan Pools, Sun Pools, Alaglass Pools, American, and Aloha Pools are not mentioned on this list, it does not mean they are not going to make waves in 2011 as well. In fact, I’d invite any employees of these companies (including the 4 I mentioned in the article) to contribute further thoughts on what consumers and pool builders alike can expect from these manufacturers for the remainder of 2011.

Marcus, thanks for including Leisure Pools, we certainly set high standards for ourselves and try hard to be a quality company. We agree that all companies are poised to take market share and that should be at the expense of both Concrete and Vinyl Liner pools, both of which have far less compelling benefits than fiberglass pools. To that end we are in the early stages of establishing a Fiberglass Pool Manufacturers Association that will have the goal of educating consumers and promoting fiberglass pools in North America. The Association will help all companies to collectively to grow. Many of the companies you mention above have expressed their interest in the initative and we look forward to working with those reputable companies for the benefit of all manufacturers, pool instalation professionals and consumers. We are expecting a very exciting future.

Yes because the Australians have really tidied up there act in the over all standards and the interior finish they are teaching Americians a thing or two.

My main gripe with a lot of the Fibreglass Pools is that the mould has a predetermined place to fit the Skimmer (1 as rule) and it very seldom faces the prevailing wind so every 2nd leave floats past. Then when a Cleaner is conected you have no Skimmer

Whilst on the subject of Skimmers this is what I consider the most important componant on any pool(I aways fit 2) and here again Australia leads the field in their skimmer design all the Americian designs are old hat.Poolstore International a major wholesaler manufacturer have what I consider the best available worldwide, but it was a New Zealander who designed it and that makes it even better.

Yes Don spelling isnt ny strength but with a name like that you must be Dutch,so dont worry about how Americans is spelt, at least I have raised a little interest. But did you know apart from a New Zealander being the first to the top of Mt Everest we also helped America to split the Atom later we stole the Americas Cup.

Yes I have seen those dedicated lines to work a Cleaner and yes they are bloody dangerous I guess you are aware of the word entrapment.

Sorry about the spelling we can all get it wrong it adds a little colour to the blog be it English or American English.

O by the way try 2 Skimmers and you will find it really works, mind you it might cost a little more and make the pool owner happy.

Makes me proud that I am a Barrier Reef Dealer... I sailed under a lucky star 4 maybe 5 years ago when I met Tony... Not too many CEOs show up at a dealers home, fit in like family, stay for fishing trips and dinner... G'day

Great news Marcus, So glad to hear that Viking is willing to change their act. If every manufacturer would build a fantastic pool everyone would benefit, especially the pool owners! It's great to have a resource such as your website to get the latest information in the fiberglass pool industry. Keep it up Marcus.

Marcus, Too bad you didn't stop by our booth at Atlantic City for us to show you the new Diamond Series pool surface finishes. We at Sun Pools have been working on this new surface for the last few years which is the first composite pool to have a finish similar to Diamond Brite the most popular finish in the concrete pools. These new colors are called Diamond White and Diamond Blue, they are clear coat free, a single spray application, and have exceeded our expectations in the lab. The first units have been shipped and we should have some finished pictures on the web-site shortly. We are also going to announce the addition of 6 new models for the 2011 season featuring 4 large family size models. The early sales have been strong we are preparing for a busy season.

@Jeff---Thanks for the input regarding Barrier Reef. So glad you've been happy with their product. If you do any beautiful pools or projects this year, I'd love for you to send in a photo with the story behind it and we'll post it as an article.

@Jaime---Thanks for the kind words bud, but I'm not the only one that's pushing this educational movement. In fact, the content you've been putting on your site lately has been of exceptional value to homeowners and pool shoppers. Keep up the good fight my friend!

@Curt--- Hey bud, sorry we couldn't link up in A.C., it sounds like you've got quite a bit of great things going on with Sun. I very much hope your 2011 is a great one.

If you'd ever like to do an article Curt about what makes your finish unique and superior, I'd love for you to contribute a guest post.

Thanks again everyone!!!

Some very interesting things going on with the fiberglass pools. Might have to rethink getting a gunite pool.

Hi,

did some pricing on fiberglass pools about 1.5 yrs ago. Currently, ready to mover forward with my project. Initial pricing show huge increase in cost. Has the gelcoat / etc pushed the shell prices upwards of 30% or am I just being stroked? Firgured this was a good place to start as a sounding board?

Hi Tony, to tell you the truth, one really can't make a comparison unless you're getting the quote from the exact same company as before. An easily solution would be:

1. Ask the builder to explain the price.

2. Get more quotes to compare.

Good luck!!
